Course Overview:

This one-day course offers an introduction to the traditional use of Hawaiian plants for medicinal purposes. Participants will learn about the cultural significance of these plants, their healing properties, and how they can be incorporated into modern wellness practices. Special consideration will be given to sourcing Hawaiian plants in Mankato, Minnesota.

Course Objectives: 1. Understand the cultural and historical significance of plants in traditional Hawaiian healing practices. 2. Learn about the medicinal properties of specific Hawaiian plants and their applications. 3. Explore methods for sourcing and cultivating Hawaiian plants in non-native environments. 4. Discuss ethical considerations and sustainability practices related to the use of Hawaiian plants. 5. Gain practical knowledge on how to incorporate Hawaiian plant medicine into personal wellness routines.

Course Structure: Overview of traditional Hawaiian healing practices and the role of plants.

- Introduction to key medicinal plants native to Hawaii, such as ‘ōlena (turmeric), noni, and kalo (taro).[Maybe kī (cordyline fruticosa) and laukahi (Plantago lanceolata or Plantago major)] - Discussion of the cultural significance and spiritual aspects of Hawaiian plant medicine.

- Exploration of ethical sourcing practices and sustainability considerations.

- Practical tips for growing and cultivating Hawaiian plants in non-native environments.

Practical Demonstration and Hands-On Activity:

Hands-on demonstration of preparing and using Hawaiian plant remedies, such as teas, tinctures, and salves.

Group activity: Creating a simple herbal remedy using locally sourced ingredients. - Q&A session: Participants can ask questions and seek clarification on topics covered during the session.

Assessment: - Participation and engagement during the session: 50% - Reflection paper or journal entry post-session: 50%

Required Materials: - Notebook and pen for taking notes - Comfortable clothing suitable for hands-on activities
