Come and learn Traditional Style Lomilomi Massage!

This is a 4 day course in which you will learn a full body 60 minute massage as well as an introduction to the history of the Hawaiian Healing Arts and to Lomi protocols. The style of massage we are learning is from 3 different family traditions carried by Aunty Suzi from Holistic Honu Wellness Center in California. The instructor for this course is Olivia Hageman who has been studying and practicing Lomilomi for the last 10 years.

No experience is necessary! 

This is an NCBTMB approved CEs course. Taking this course will in NOT make you a Lomilomi practitioner, but will enable you to give an amazing Lomilomi style massage.

Hawaiian Plant Medicines, Spa applications and Myofascial Release with Aunty Suzi Ko

Aunty Suzi Ko will be teaching several classes after the Traditional Style Lomilomi Basics course. She will be teaching about La'au Lapa'au- Hawaiian Plants and their medicines, spa applications, and advanced Hawaiian Myofascial releases.  Each class is a one day course and only advanced Myofascial relsease has a prerequesite of basics in Lomilomi or may be taken with instructor permission. 

Day One: Understanding La'au Lapa'au (6CEs) $90, materials $20

La'au Lapa'au: medicine, curing medicine

In this course you will explore traditional Hawaiian medicinal plants, their value and effect on the body, where they grow, how to gather, prepare and administer them. Select plants will be discussed in depth. 

  • 10am to 12pm - Lecture: History & introduction/protocols specific plants.
  • 12pm to 2pm - Kūkākūkā - talk story/Lunch Break
  • 2pm to 4pm - Hands-on: Applications of specific plants.

Day Two: Hawaiian Flower Essences & Remedies (8CEs) $120, materials $30

This class continues the plant-medicine discussion from Understanding La'au Lapa'au and moves into the flower essence realm of applications. This is where we look at the tinctures, poultices and oils and create materials for more general and aromatic uses. We explore what Hawaiian botanical and flower essences are, how they work, the history of their use, how to make your own, different levels of essences, and the proper application of Hawaiian botanical remedies for health and healing.

  • 10am to 12pm - Lecture: Defining and using ʻike to determine materials used
  • 12pm to 2pm - Kūkākūkā - talk story/Lunch Break
  • 2pm to 6pm - Hands-on: Creating essences and remedies

Day Three: Hawaiian-Style Spa Applications (8CEs) $120, materials $30

Building on the previous two classes from Understanding La'au Lapa'au and Hawaiian Flower Essences and Remedies this course looks at the ways traditional healing techniques can be applied to spa-work. We will review the knowledge, skills and abilities related to dry-room spa techniques and incorporate the application of products made in Hawaiian Flower Essences.

  • 10am to 12pm - Utilizing Hawaiian Lomilomi techniques as part of the spa practice
  • 12pm to 2pm - Kūkākūkā - talk story/Lunch Break
  • 2pm to 6pm - Hands-on: Lomilomi applications for spa or individual treatments

Day Four: Hawaiian-style Myofascial Release (6CEs) $90

Overuse injuries and overtraining can create a nightmare of overlapping conditions which can have a negative effect on the strength, flexibility, timing and endurance of the client. Therapists can learn these methods and immediately apply them to their clients. This course goes over advanced releases. Students should have knowledge of basic landmark anatomy prior to attending. 

  • 10am to 12pm - Lomilomi as part of the massage practice
  • 12pm to 2pm - Kūkākūkā - talk story/Lunch Break
  • 2pm to 6pm - Hands-on: Lomilomi routine (fine points)

Aunty Suzi is a native Hawaiian healing arts specialist and instructor. She is a Kumu Ho'ola and Kumu Lomilomi.  Aunty Suzi carries on the traditions for many families on multiple islands, notably Aunty Margaret Machado and Papa K. Kepilino. She has uniki with Loea Kawaikapuokalani Hewett for Ho'ola.  Aunty continues her work in Berkeley, California at the Holistic Honu Wellness Center providing both services in healing work and teaching the healing arts to name a few things. 

This is an incredible opportunity to learn from a traditional Hawaiian healer. 


All courses are NCBTMB approved CEs and Aunty Suzi is a Board Certified instructor.
